In Newfoundland the emphasis was placed on collaboration through performance in the inaugural International Atlantic Crossroads Festival. This festival saw each of the 13 songwriters perform in four different venues each night. The venues were The Ship Inn, Erins Bar, Bridie Molloys and The Celtic Hearth. These gigs were very well attended and the Irish songwriters were very warmly received. Jim and Lillian Fidler pulled out all the stops to organise the return leg of Islands of Song.
The ‘Islands of Song’ initiative set out to bring contemporary Irish song writing to the fore and this was especially beneficial in Newfoundland where the audiences found it refreshing to hear new music from Ireland.
Jim Fidler- Jim along with Lillian Fidler were instrumental in ensuring the success of the Islands of Songinitiative, and organised the Newfoundland series of events.
With diverse song writing styles from Ger Wolfe and Niall Connolly to Mark Greville, Martin Finn to Mick Flannery, Ken Cotter to Clare O Mahony, the Irish contingent won over their audiences each night and by the last performance had many new friends.
The ‘Islands of Song’ project was capped off by a gala performance in the St John’s Arts and Culture Centre, a beautiful 1000 seat auditorium. Each Irish songwriter took to the stage with a full band and their fellow Newfoundland songwriters; Jim Fidler, Darrell Power, Colleen Power, Ron Hynes, Pamela Morgan and Hugh Scott. The two-hour show received a standing ovation from the audience.
This was a fitting end to Islands of Song 2005. Attentions are now turning to building on the success in 2006.
